The 15th Edition of Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) is scheduled to be held from 28th January to 3rd February 2018. MIFF is a biennial documentary, short fiction and animation film festival organized by the Films Division under the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India. In the past, the MIFF has been attended by documentary and animation film-makers from all over the world; and it has become one of the flagship events in India. It may be noted that the Golden Conch, the prestigious top award of MIFF amounting to approximately INR 60 lakhs, recognizes the best talent in documentary & animation film making. 2. Documentary films, short fiction (up to 45 minutes), and animation films produced between September 1st, 2015 to August 31st, 2017 are eligible for entry in the relevant category. International Solar Alliance (ISA) was jointly launched on 30th November 2015 by the Prime Minister of India and the President of France in the presence of H.E. Mr. Ban Ki Moon, Secretary General of United Nations at the Conference of Parties (COP21) in Paris. The ISA has been conceived as a unique international platform for cooperation among 121 solar resource nations, with the aim to massively ramp up solar energy by aggregating markets, and taking solar power applications to scale to improve energy access. The ISA creates an economically conducive environment which would lead to job creation, investments resulting in profitability, competitiveness among various sectors, filling up the gaps in power supply, enhancement of manufacturing sector, all this whilst protecting the environment and ultimately making solar a buyers’ market. The ISA is considered a significant step in making solar resource rich countries self-reliant in energy. The ISA Event will witness a series of activities, not only conferences and exhibition, but actual projects and agreements signing, thereby walking the talk. News from India 1. Indian scientists find a rare, 157 million years old dinosaur fossil in Gujarat's Kutch desert Scientists in India have made a groundbreaking discovery, that of an ichthyosaur fossil in Gujarat. It’s the first time a complete fossil of this now extinct creature has been found in the country. The ichthyosaur (Greek for “fish lizard”) was a marine reptile that lived between 157 to 152 million years ago. The fossil was discovered inside rocks dating back to the Mesozoic Era, in the Kutch desert, making it the first Jurassic sea monster discovered in the region. What's the significance of this discovery? Prof Guntupalli VR Prasad, who led the expedition, said the 5.5m-long specimen was almost complete, with only parts of the skull and tail bones missing. "This is a remarkable discovery not only because it is the first Jurassic ichthyosaur record from India, but also it throws light on the evolution and diversity of ichthyosaurs in the Indo-Madagascan region and India's biological connectivity with other continents in the Jurassic," Prasad told the BBC. The team composed of scientists from India and Germany, came across the fossil south of the village of Lodai in Gujarat last year. 2. International Children's Peace Prize 2017: Know The 10 nominees from India Little did anyone know that these kids in the age group of 12-17 years will make it to the nomination list of International Children's Peace Prize 2017, an award presented every year 'to a child who fights courageously for children's rights. The nominees of 2017 demonstrate that children are changemakers.' This year 10 Indian kids have been nominated for the prestigious award. On 4 December 2017, Kids Rights Foundation (the founder) will award the International Children's Peace Prize 2017. Last year, UAE based Indian teen, Kehkashan Basu had won the award. Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai had won the award in 2013. Abraham M. Keita won the award in 2015 for his fight against violence to children. The first International Children's Peace Prize was won by Baruani Ndume from Tanzania. The young crusader against child marriage and child labour, Shailendra (17 years old) has been successful for bringing 33 children back to schools, saving them from the clutches of child labour. He has also prevented 5 child marriages in his village. Nidhi has a similar story. The 15-year-old girl from Bihar is the leader of a children's group which deals with children's rights issues. Sumitra from Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) Odisha has made it to the nomination list along with 9 other children. A rugby player, Sumitra, has been training her junior since the Touraid Under 13 Girls International Rugby Tournament in London where she led the team to victory. Kavita Devi becomes the first Indian woman wrestler to be signed by WWE An Indian wrestler from Haryana, Kavita Devi, has created history by becoming the first female wrestler from India to be signed by World Wrestling Entertainment. Devi, who has won a developmental contract with WWE, will receive opportunities to train to become a ‘WWE Superstar’, according to the company. An accomplished powerlifter who won gold while representing India at the 2016 South Asian Games, the five-feet nine-inch wrestler also has the distinction of being the first Indian woman to compete in a WWE ring, participating in the Mae Young Classic women’s tournament in August 2017. Having learned her ring skills from her mentor, former World Heavyweight Champion The Great Khali, Devi is expected to begin training at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida, in January 2018. Although she is relatively inexperienced compared to some of her counterparts in the Classic, WWE believes that Devi has the physical tools to go a long way. She was a part of WWE’s historic Dubai tryout in April 2017 and caught the attention of the WWE scouts. Vol. 01, Issue. 08, October 27, 2017. 4. Bihar girl wins international award for educating lower caste kids Heroes are born in every nook and corner of India. This time a 20-year-old girl from Bihar has made her native Bhojpur District proud by winning international acclaim for her efforts to uplift the Musahar community, considered one of the lowest and most downtrodden in the state’s caste-ridden society. Choti Kumari Singh, hailing from an impoverished upper caste Rajput family, has won Women's Creativity in Rural Life Award from the Switzerland-based Women s World Summit Foundation. Choti started helping with social and educational work among Musahars in her own village of Ratanpur in 2014, after joining a programme run by the Mata Amritanandamayi Math of the spiritual leader Mata Amritanandamayi Devi (Amma). The programme aimed at adopting 101 villages across the country to make them self-reliant models of sustainability, according to a release issued by the Math. Choti is the youngest person to receive the USD 1,000 (Rs 65,000 approx.) award since it was instituted in 1994 to honour women around the world exhibiting exceptional creativity, courage and commitment to the improvement of the quality of life in rural communities. Mostly working as landless labourers, the Musahar community suffers from poverty, near-total illiteracy and lack of personal hygiene. Child marriages are rampant and school attendance is negligible. When the programme was introduced at Ratnapur in 2014, Choti started offering free after-school tuition classes for children. Choti initiated self-help groups wherein every woman saves Rs 20 a month, which is deposited in a common bank account for starting home-based activities. The tuition classes proved to a huge success with 108 children enrolled. This is no mean task in a village with a population of less than 1,000 people. Initially, the Musahar villagers were hostile. They used to drink, gamble and verbally abuse me. However, once they started observing the positive changes brought by our work, the situation became relatively favourable, Choti recalls.
